Factors to Consider When Buying Running Shoes for Wet Weather
Two major factors to consider when buying running shoes that adapt to wet weather conditions are:
We recommend shoes with aggressive tread because they promote traction. And you need all the traction a shoe can give while running during the wet weather because the ground gets slippery.
Consider how deep and widely-spaced the lugs are. If you plan on using the shoe for running on both roads and trails, the lugs should be closely spaced.
The best shoes for running in wet weather are breathable.
Usually, breathable shoes and clothes have low waterproofing quality. We’d go for breathability over waterproofing because that’s one way we can be sure our feet would have access to air, and won’t smell.
This is one feature you can’t afford to compromise on, especially if you run long distances, hard trails or use the shoes for both sports and casual events.
If you run on smooth trails or short distances, you can go for shoes with less cushioning.
Insulation is important, but not as important as the other factors because running generates heat. But we understand that some days are colder than other days. On such days, an insulated running shoe could mean the world to you.
You can add extra insulation by wearing (moisture-wicking) socks.
This will make it easy for others, especially drivers, to spot you as you run. Visibility is usually poor as a result of rainfall, fog or mist.
Some shoes have reflective features. If yours doesn’t have, you can make yours reflective with materials like the 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material.
Look at the Nike men’s Air Zoom Pegasus 35 shield running shoes again to see what we mean. It has reflective components.
Are Waterproof Running Shoes Worth It?
Waterproof running shoes are worth it when you’re running in hot, cold or damp weather conditions. But not when running in very wet conditions such as when it’s raining.
In such conditions, invest in water-resistant or water-repellent shoes as well as the best rain gear for running.
What do Runners Wear in the Rain?
Runners wear about the same things they wear when the weather is dry to run in the rain. But there are a few additions and special needs.
So while you may feel comfortable running in your sports clothes and running shoes during the dry weather, you’d need more than those for running in the rain.
You’ll also need a functional rain jacket like the Columbia Watertight II rain jacket.
Does Nike Have Waterproof Shoes?
Nike has waterproof shoes which, as advertised on their site, features the famous GORE-TEX technology.
But most of Nike’s shoes for wet weather are categorized under ‘water-resistant’, and feature other shoe/ fabric technologies such as Nike Lunarlon, Nike Air, and Nike Max Air.
Nike is more about functionality than verbal or visual aesthetics. So I’d bet that Nike offers more water-resistant and water-repellent shoes because they’re better suited for wet weather than waterproof shoes.
Do I Need Waterproof Running Shoes?
Sometimes, you do. Other times, you’re better off without them.
When running in the snow, cold and damp conditions you need waterproof running shoes.
But when it’s raining, waterproof running shoes may not be your best option. Breathable, water-repellent, non-waterproof shoes are better. You need such shoes because if you use waterproof running shoes, water which gets into your shoes will be trapped, making you feel uncomfortable.
Waterproofing compromises on breathability by sealing the pores of your running shoes. Breathability helps your feet remain dry by letting out moisture and letting in air.
Does Waterproof Spray Work on Running Shoes?
No, it doesn’t. Buying waterproof spray for running shoes is like buying snake oil. If you’d be running in the rain, you’ll still get wet. So prepare your mind for that and get water-repellent, breathable shoes, while also keeping in mind all we’ve earlier discussed.
